Guthrie County REC is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s scholarships. As an electric cooperative owned by the members it serves, Guthrie County REC offers an annual scholarship to help local students achieve their post-high school goals.
“We pride ourselves on giving back to our communities by supporting these bright students,” says Guthrie County REC CEO Cozy Nelsen. “We’re excited to see what they do next.”
The cooperative received many qualified applications, which speaks highly of local students and schools.
Three $1,000 scholarships were awarded to the following individuals:
Adam is the son of Janet and Daniel Budd of Hamlin. Adam has a strong passion for engineering and environmental preservation. He plans to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering at Iowa State University, focused on environmental regulations on aeronautical design. Throughout high school, Adam earned academic achievement honors in football, track and baseball all four years, and is a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and FFA.
Gavin is the son of Carrie and Darin Sloss of Guthrie Center. He plans to attend Iowa State University to pursue a degree in agricultural studies with a focus on entrepreneurship. He hopes to become an agronomist to help local farmers and support rural operations by using advanced agricultural technologies. Throughout high school, Gavin worked part-time while also caring for his cattle and staying active in 4-H, FFA, wrestling, track, baseball, band and cross country.
Arilyan is the daughter of Arianne and Ryan Steenblock of Panora. Arilyan is a natural leader with a strong work ethic and compassion for others. She plans to attend Creighton University to become a nurse practitioner specializing in women’s health with hopes to give back to her rural community and use her voice and skills to advocate for others. Throughout high school, she has balanced part-time work with active involvement in National Honor Society, church youth group, FFA, and numerous sports and community service activities.
