Call before you dig

Whether you're trenching in a field, planting a tree, or digging a foundation, Iowa law requires everyone to locate underground utilities before digging.

Notify IOWA ONE CALL to begin the process. Utilities will be notified immediately and have 48 hours, excluding weekends and holidays, to send a locator to the site of the dig, to identify where wires and cables are buried.

Exceptions to the IOWA ONE CALL law are people who are doing usual farm work such as plowing, cultivating, planting, harvesting or replacing fence posts in pre-dug holes. Unless you will dig deeper than 15 inches, there is no need to call.
